All workshops will take place rain or shine unless otherwise noted. Please register early! Most classes have limited enrollment; others may be canceled if minimum enrollment is not met. Please give 24 hour's notice if you cannot attend so that we may open the space to someone else. We reserve the right to charge no shows.

Knitting for Beginners & Advanced

Saturdays, January 17, February 21 & March 14 , 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Lois Dansereau has taught many knitting courses and with the help of experienced knitters Margaret Mertz and June DeFelice will help the beginner in getting started or help the more experienced with a problem pattern. Bring a project you are working on or begin one with Merck Forest’s own 100% wool. Beginners can bring size 6 needles and a ball of sport weight cotton to make a washcloth. Lois is able to teach the most experienced and will also cover the basics, finishing, making your own designs, both the European and American methods, knitting with more that one color and different stitches.

Pack Basket Workshop

Saturday, January 24, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Bliss McIntosh has been weaving baskets from natural materials for the past 25 years. In this workshop, she guides participants in weaving a 12 to 14-inch high pack basket from flat reed in the style of the old Adirondack splint backpack. Each person should bring a sturdy pair of scissors, flexible tape measure, pencil and 10 wooden clothes pins. Bring a bag lunch.

Valentine Card Making with Jane Davies

What better way to say “I love you” than with a hand crafted valentine? Come join us for a Valentine workshop in which we’ll explore the art of the handmade card using a variety of materials and collage techniques. You will come away with new skills and inspiration for all your card making projects, as well as a unique Valentine for your loved one. All materials will be provided and are included in the workshop fee. However, feel free to bring any photographs or other personal ephemera you would like to incorporate into your Valentine.

Pruning with Brandon Tschorn

Saturday, March 21, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Fruit tree specialist Brandon Tschorn will give an overview of pruning techniques for fruit trees in the home garden with an emphasis on reclaiming wild apple trees. This is a hands-on workshop with Brandon demonstrating pruning techniques in Merck Forest’s orchard. If you would like to participate please bring pruning tools. Otherwise you may watch the demonstration. Other fruit trees will be discussed. Please dress for the weather; the workshop will be held outside. This workshop is suitable for ages 14 and up.
